Periodic Table
Chart of elements that is organized by each of the element’s increasing atomic number
Periodic
Anything that is repeating according to a pattern
Alkali Metals
Metals found in Group 1 of the periodic table; They are soft, ductile, shiny, violently reactive with water, excellent conductors of electricity, very reactive, have a silvery metallic luster
Group/Family
Vertical columns in the periodic table numbered 1-18 that represent similar physical and chemical properties
Transition Metals
Metals that are found in Groups 3-12 of the periodic table; they are malleable, good conductors of heat/electricity; the only characteristic they ALL have in common is hat they are all metals
Valence Electrons
Number of electrons in an element’s outermost energy level
Luis Dot Diagram
A diagram that uses the symbol of an element and dots to represent its valence electrons
Electron Configurations
The arrangement of the electrons in the electron cloud into energy levels and orbitals
Metals
Elements that are shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity
Periods
Horizontal rows in the Periodic Table that represent the different energy levels
Metalloids
Elements that share characteristics of both metals and non-metals
Nonmetals
Elements that are dull, brittle, and poor conductors
Halogens
Non-Metals that are found in group 17 of the periodic table; they are colorful, highly reactive, and react readily with alkaline metals to form ionic salts
Noble Gases
Non-Metals found in group 18 of the periodic table; all non-reactive and they are all stable
Alkaline Earth Metals
Metals that are found in group 2 of the periodic table; they are soft, silvery colored, very reactive, more stable than alkali metals, react readily with halogens to form ionic salts, and have a metallic luster
