Bald Eagle
A white-headed North American Eagle, it is the national symbol of the United States
Bill of Rights
A list of the rights that the American government cannot take away from it’s citizens.
Declaration of Independence
A document that explains why the colonists no longer wanted to follow British rule and declared that they were an independent nation.
Dollar Bill
Type of currency used by the United States.
Liberty
The state of being free from limits on people’s behavior.
Point of View
What anohter person thinks about a particular concept of idea.
Symbol
Something that represents something else.
U.S. Constitution
A document that outlines the structures of the federal government to have three equal branches.
What keeps the U.S government from having too much power?
The Bill of Rights of the Constitution keeps the government from getting too much power by listing the rights that Americans have and that can not be taken away.
Ridge and Basin Region
North and Northwest of Utah. Basin refers to the flat depressions, salt beds, and lakes in the region. Ridge refers to the isolated ribbons of mountains.
Rocky Mountains
Diagonally across the central part of Utah. VERY large mountain range.
Colorado Plateau
South and Southeast of Utah. Plateau is not just flat lands. There are rugged mountains and colorful gorges.
Boundary
A line or feature that divides one area from another.
Landform
A physical feature of Earth.
Plain
A flat area of land.
Region
A large land area with similar features.
How are landforms and bodies of water similar?
They are both physical features on earth.
Floods
An overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines.
GPS (Global Positioning System)
Satellites to identify where places on Earth are located.
Satellite
A machine that orbits Earth.
Transcontinental Railroad
Railroad that ran across the United States.
Irrigate
Divert water from mountain streams for agricultural purposes.
Import
Bring goods in from another location.
What are the four major industries of Utah?
Agriculture, mining, oil, and tourism.
Toll Road
Road you have to pay in order to travel on.
Golden Pass Road
Toll road created by Parley Pratt that made travel into the Salt Lake Valley easier.
Temperature Inversion
Cold air at ground level becomes trapped by warmer air above.
Fault
A fracture in Earth’s crust.
Fuel Break
Area completely cleared of vegetation that helps stop the spread of fires.
How often to earthquakes occur along the Wasatch fault?
Every 300 years.

The pattern of weather for a location measured over time.

The measurement of the moisture in the air.

Water that falls to the earth in the form of a liquid or a solid.

The measurement of how hot or cold the air is.

A natural resource that can be replaced after it’s used.

Protecting a resource.

Something that is grown or made.

A map that shows weather pattern in a place or region.
Compass Rose
The part of a map that shows directions and helps you determine the location of places.

To predict the weather.
Map Key
The part of a map that tells you what every line, color, and symbol on the map stands for.
Physical Map
A map that shows natural features of places.
Political Map
A map that shows the locations and borders of human-made places.
Resource Map
A map that shows how natural resources are distributed in a place.

Part of a map that allows you to measure how far apart places are.

City in which the state government is founded.
