Physical Evidence
Anything that can establish a crime has happened and links the crime and the criminal.
Crime Scene
Place where the crime occurred.
First Responder
The first person who arrives at the scene, their responsibility to care for injured people or arrest. Then, secure crime scene.
What are the dif. techniques to to record crime scenes?
Photography, Drawings, Notes, and Videos.
Overview photographs.
Shows the crime scene in wide angles. Dif vantage points, shows entries and exits to crime scene.
Intermediate Photographs
Closer to the evidence, but still shows the area surrounding evidence. Shows evidence in relation to other objects in the room.
Closeup Photographs
Focus on piece of evidence, specific details. Should include a card with identification # and item to give scale and size.
Rough Sketches
Shows location of evidence and contains accurate amount of distances between them and the crime scene.
Finished Sketch
A precise representation of the crime scene.
Secondary Crime Scene
Additional sites where criminal activity might’ve happened.
How to store blood stained evidence?
Can’t be stored in an airtight container, encourages growth of mold.
Chain of Custody
A list of all persons who had possession of the evidence during the crime investigation.
Questioned Sample/ Unknown Sample
A sample of physical evidence that’s collected at the crime scene and of unknown origin.
Known Sample
Comes from a particular person or place, to compare with the unknown sample.
How to store a firearm?
Place in paper bag or envelope to prevent moisture from building up.
