Unit 2 Test (study vocab) Flashcards
Cytolysis/Lyse
swelling and bursting of ANIMAL CELLS when water enters as the cell sits in a hypotonic solution
Osmotic Pressure
pressure exerted on the cell membrane of a cell/vacuole from the water. usually used to describe plant cell water pressure
Turgor Pressure/ Turgid
pressure placed on a plant’s cell wall as a result of the amount of water in the cell
Plasmolysis
when a cell shrinks inside its cell wall while the cell wall remains intact. this occurs when plant cells are exposed to hypertonic solutions
Sodium-Potassium Pump
a transport protein in the membrane (animal cells). it actively transports 3 sodium (na+) OUT of the cell and 2 potassium (k) INTO the cell. Requires ATP
Receptor-mediated endocytosis
the uptake of specific molecules based on a cell’s receptor proteins
Active Transport
movement of a substance across the membrane. goes against its concentration gradient, so it goes LOW to HIGH. goes through specific transport proteins, and requires ATP
Concentration Gradient
a difference in the concentration of a substance across a distance
Pinocytosis
type of endocytosis. the cell ingests extracellular fluid and its dissolved solutes (“cell-drinking”)
