Cabeza De Vaca
1528- Wrecked into an island off the coast of Texas (near Galveston.) He was the first European to walk on present-day Texas.
De La Salle
1684-Was a French explorer who led an expedition down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. He claimed the region by the Mississippi River for King Louis XIV and named it “Louisiana”.
De Pineda
Commanded a Spanish expedition that sailed in 1519 from Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico, and landed in Cabo Rojo, Mexico. He and his men were the Europeans to first map the Gulf of Mexico area.
Cortes
1518-Conquered the Aztecs and claimed Mexico on behalf of Spain.
Marques de Rubí
1776-1778- Spain assigned a guy named Marques De Rubi “Visitador General”. His job is to tour the East Texas Missions. He wants to close Missions, make arrangements. His tour takes 2 year and he travels over 7,500 miles. When he gets back, he says “We should close all East Texas missions except San Antonio and Goliad.” He then said that the people in these East Texas missions should get pulled to San Antonio out of their mission. The people stay out there and form a new city named Nacogdoches.
Augustin de Iturbide
Around 1821- Augustin De Iturbide issued a three part plan on how the Mexican people can gain independence from Spain.
Part one- If and when Mexico defeats Spain in battle, Mexico will remain an independent country. Wanted to walk completely away from Spain.
Part two- Everyone in Mexico will be treated equally and fairly.
Part three- Mexico will remain Roman Catholic.
August 24, 1821, the Treaty of Córdoba was signed. His plan worked, won the war, and the Treaty made Mexico an independent country. Mexico is now an independent country. He declared himself as emperor of Mexico in 1822.
What was the impact of Fort St. Louis on the Spanish?
The Spanish didn’t like the French coming in and building a colony, so the Spanish went to destroy the fort. Fort St. Louis was a sign of the French living there, and the Spanish didn’t like that. They came to destroy it but the Karankawas had already done it, so they burned what was left of the fort.
What was the primary goal of the Spanish Missions?
To convert the Native Americans to Christianity and for them to become Spanish citizens.
Why did the Spanish Missions fail?
The Native Americans didn’t want to be Catholic, and the Plains’ Tribes resented the missionaries. They also resented their intrusion on their hunting grounds.
What were the terms of the Adams-Onis Treaty?
The Adams-Onis Treaty in 1819 set the boundary between the U.S., Spain, and France. America gave up ALL of its land claims to Texas. The Sabine River is the boundary. Florida is owned by the U.S..
What were the terms of the Mexican Colonization Law of 1824?
It says you no longer have to go to Mexico City to get approved land contracts, local state governments can approve land contracts. Stephen F. Austin gets more land and without a doubt the most successful empresario. Gives everyone a personal tour of their land.
Federalists
Federalists want the National government and the local/state government to have shared/equal power.
Centralists
Centralists want all the power centralized in the National government. Don’t want to give up any power and state power is weak.
Depression
A recession in the market or economy; normally can be severe and long.
Militia
A group of people fighting for a purpose, but not a professional army. Can be organizations or a non-professional army.
Pioneers
People who are first to explore or settle a new area or country.
