What were the articles of confederation
The first written document that established the function of the national and states gov. after declaring dependence w Britain
What problems were caused by the articles of confederation.
The states were tied loosely together and there was not much federal power so many thins were hard to control
How did the US gov respond to shays rebellion
There wasn’t a strong fed. gov. military to put it down so the state militia had to handle it while many rebels escaped
What can the national gov. do (articles of confederation)
- decalre war, negotiate foreign treaties, settle arguments between states, run post office, borrow money from states, run militia
What can state gov. do (articles of confederation)
Regulate commerce, tax, enforce laws, defend other states, run own currency
What was the purpose of the constitutional convention
Come to a conclusion about a new and better document to solve problems from AOC
How did Virginia plan benefit large states?
Large states benefited because the amount of reps. was proportional since they had a higher population, they got more reps.
How did New Jersey plan benefit small states
Reps was equal so the population wouldn’t affect amount reps.
What was the great compromise
- Created the senate and house of reps.
- Two proposed plans were virginia and new jersey
What was the commerce and slave trade
- International slave trade started to be taxed
What was the three fifths compromise
- Settled debate on whether states should be represented in congress equally or proportionally
- 3/5 of slaves counted toward population

Slaves could be captured and returned to owners

made up of congress: can impeach prez, vp and supreme court, decide on case involving the constitution, right bills to become laws
Executtive branch
Made of prez and vp: veto or pass laws, maintain cabinet of advisors, declare war, represent US in foreign affairs, execute laws and regulation, coin money, make treaties
JUdicial branch
Made of supreme court: Interperet constituionality of laws
How does legislative check or balance other branches?
- Executive branch: veto laws, approve treaties, impeach pres.
Judicial: Revise a law, impeach a judge, approve appointment
