Unit 2 Test Flashcards
What is the application of Law of Conservation?
You can apply it to mass and to the analysis of element cycles by conducting a mass balance.
What is Dalton’s Postulates?
Atoms of different elements may combine with each other in a fixed simple whole number ratios to form compound atoms.
Protons, Neutrons, and electrons in neutral atoms and in ions.
The change on the proton and electron are exactly the same size but oppisite.
What is AMU?
AMU is the abreviation for atomic mass unit. It is used to express the masses of atoms, molocules, or subatomic particles. An atomic mass unit is equal to half the mass of a single atom.
How do you solve an Isotopic abundance problem?
You add the amount and then the percent adundance/100. Set up like example below.

What are isotopes?
Same element but different number of neutrons. Thus different masses.
Forms and order of electromagnetic spectrum.
Radio Waves, Microwaves, infared, visible light, ultra violet, x-rays, gamma rays.
What is the law of multiple proportions?
Whenever the same two elements form more than one compound.
What was Rutherford Experiment?
Created so you can describe and atom. It showed atoms have mostly empty space with positive charge concentrated in the nucleus.
What was JJ Thompson’s model of the atom?
He proposed the plum pudding model of the atom which had negative charge electrons.
Excitation of electrons and how it relates to energy absorption and emission.
When an electron temporarily occupies and energy state greater than its ground state. This is a process called absorption. The electron absorbs the energy and jumps to a higher energy level.
