Suspense
The sense of growing tension, fear, and excitement felt by the reader.
Themes
The message about life or human nature that writers share with others.
Infer
Make an educated guess about the theme, based on clues in the text.
Foreshadow
Occurs when a writer provides hints that suggest future events in a story.
Dialogue
Written conversation between two or more characters.
Event
Something that accrues in a story.
Imagery
Descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader.
Literary Criticism
Writing that examines, analyzes, and interprets a piece of literature or a general aspect of literature.
Authors Purpose
The reason he or she is writhing-is often to inform or to persuade other readers to view a text in a certain way.
Criteria
Defines and classifies works of literature based on certain standards.
Summarize
When you briefly retell the central ideas and most important details of a piece of writing in your own words.
Counter argument
An argument made to oppose another argument.
Rhetorical Questions
Questions that have such obvious answers that they do not require a reply.
