Status and role
What is status?
Status is a position that someone has in society. It can be fixed by others, or acheived.
An example of high status?
Someone who is able to buy an expensive car, live in a large house and travel for pleasure is seen as successful and has a high status
What is a symbol?
A symbol is something that carries a particular meaning that is recognized by people who share the same culture
What is language?
Language allows people to communicate with one another and there are norms surrounding the use of language
What are roles?
With each status, comes a set of norms, called a role. The role of a student includes the norms such as attending classes, asking questions, and learning. You have some choice over how you act over that role, like being a good student or being a lazy one.
What is gender?
The roles and expectations associated with being male or female
What is age?
a form of classification based on how old you are - childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age. there is a particular role expected with each age.
What is ethinicity?
the state of belonging to a particular group based with a shared culture that has language, beliefs, history and traditions

the behaviour expected of someone based of their status in society
