When does secondary growth occur?
In older stems, after primary growth has ended
What are the benefits of secondary growth? (6)
*Plant body becomes taller and wider
*Increases the amount of vascular tissue which increases the rate nutrients are conducted throughout the plant
*Increases leaves, which increase the rate of photosynthesis
*Increases amount of roots, which increases the rate of absorption as well as plant stability
*Produces more flowers and increases the rate of reproduction
*Decreases competition from smaller plants
Disadvantages of secondary growth
*Environmental changes year to year
*Must obtain an increasing number of resources every year
