The scientific study of behavior and mental process.
Wilhelm Wundt
A physiologists, but became interested in the structure of the mind (not the brain). Created objective introspection.
Edward Titchener
Was a student of Wilhelm Wundt, took his ideas and turned it into Structuralism.
Objective Introspection
Method of examining and measuring one’s own thoughts and mental activities
Structuralism
The focus was on the structure of consciousness
William James
A philosopher and physiologist who did not believe that it was yet possible to study the structure of the mind. was the author of the first ever psychology textbook
Functionalism
How them mind helps people to adapt, live, and play.
Max Wertheimer
Objected structuralism. Believed that perceptions cannot be reduced to smaller elements (“the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”)
Gestalt Psychology
Sensation and perception with the assumption that naturally seek out patterns in the sensory information available to them.
The German word … meaning “an organized whole”.
Sigmund Freud
A neurologist who treated patients with nervous disorders that others in his field could not find a physical cure to.
Psychoanalysis
Emphasized unconscious conflicts as the cause of psychological disorders. Arrived at the conclusion that the ailments of his patients must be emerging from the mind and therapy model.
Ivan Pavlov
a physiologist who studied salivation in dogs, demonstrating that involuntary reactions could can be caused to occur in response to a previously unrelated stimulus. His work influenced John Watson.
John Watson
A psychologist. Did not agree with any of the existing viewpoints in psychology.
Behaviorism
The scientific focus only on observable behavior.
