What were the goals of the Big Three at the Yalta Conference?

A

Roosevelt:
- Wanted Russia’s help to invade Japan and would consider conceding part of Europe to get this. Also wanted Russia to participate in the United Nations.
Churchill:
- Wanted free elections for the people of Europe.
Stalin:
- Wanted a sphere of influence to act as a shield against further German aggression.
Extra:
- Roosevelt negotiated with Stalin by cutting Churchill out of negotiations leading to much being ceded to Russia.

What were the outcomes of the Yalta Conference?

A
  • Germany’s unconditional surrender
  • Germany would be broken in half between the Allies and the Soviets.
  • Creation of the UN
  • Germany to pay reparations
  • Stalin entered the Japanese war in exchange for a few Japanese islands.
  • War criminals would be brought to justice
  • Poland would be reformed but with some territory ceded to the USSR. Poland took part of Germany though.

What was the Potsdam Conference?

A

Met to discuss and reinforce the agreements of the Yalta conference.
Roosevelt had died and was replaced by the communist-hating Vice-President Harry Truman.
Churchill lost the election to Clement Attlee who replaced him halfway through the conference.
