Unit 2 Review (Biodiversity) Flashcards
Keystone Species
A species, often a predator, that exerts a profound influence on a community in excess of that expected by its relative abundance.
what do species richness and evenness reveal about an ecosystem?
they indicate how stable an ecosystem is
provisioning services
the goods produced or provided from an ecosystem,, ie) lumber and food
regulating
the benefits obtained from regulating ecosystem processes ie) flood regulation, water purification, air detoxification
cultural
non material benefits ie) camping or playing soccer in the park, or going on hikes for the fun of it
supporting
services necessary for producing other ecosystem services ie) water cycling, soil formation and retention
what is the difference between resistance and resilience?
resistance= the ability of an ecosystem to maintain its normal functions during a disturbance resilliance= the ability for an ecosystem to recover from a disturbance
what are some of the benefits of fire?
- gets rid of excess leaf litter and ground vegetation
- maintains native species that are able to withstand fire: those species adapt with thermal insulation in their leaves and bark so that they can withstand the fires
- thins the forest canopy which allows for more sunlight
primary succession
begins with bare rock,, ex) newly formed islands
secondary succession
happens after a disturbance,, ex) fire or flood
