Unit 2 Review Flashcards
what are the 2 parts of the central nervous system?
brain & spinal cord
controls voluntary muscles. (ex: throwing/kicking a ball)
somatic nervous system
controls involuntary muscles. (ex: heart rate/beat, blood pressure)
autonomic nervous system
carries the impulses from the cell body toward the axon terminals
axon
white, fatty substance that insulates and protects the axon for some neurons
myelin sheath
conduct impulses from sense organs (ex: eyes, nose, skin)
sensory neurons
conduct impulses to muscles or glands
motor neurons
plays an important role in motor control (posture & balance)
cerebellum
part of hind brain, controls your breathing & a variety of reflexes
medulla
gives one the ability to learn and store complex & abstract information & to project thinking in the future
cerebral cortex
band of fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres of the cerebral cortex
corpus callosum
concerned with organization, planning, and thinking
frontal lobe
concerned with hearing, memory, emotion and speaking
temporal lobe
imaging technique used to study the brain to pinpoint injuries and brain deterioration
CAT/CT scan
imaging technique used to see which brain areas are being activated while performing tasks
PET scan
