How many terms are members of the House of Representatives allowed to partake in?
Two Terms. No term limits.
How many terms are Senators allowed to partake in?
Six terms. No term limits.
What are the titles for the House of Representatives and the Senate?
HOR: Speaker of the House
Senate: Vice President is given the name “President of the Senate” by the constitution.
What are some extra powers given to the Senate?
Ratify treaties, impeachment, verify presidential nominations.
How does a bill become a law?
Subcommittees, committees, House of Rep and Senate (S: reviews by party/ HOR: reviews by all), conference committee, and then to president to be vetoed or signed into law.
What are the powers given to congress based on the constitution?
Regulate taxes, declare war, and regulate commerce.
How has presidential power expanded over time?
Presidents have increased their power in economic and war situations.
What is the role of modern vice presidents?
According to the constitution they do not have much of a role, but they are mostly selected to unify a specific political party or in case of a president’s death/ them resigning.
What is the executive cabinet? How are members selected?
The executive cabinet is made up of the president’s most trusted advisors and the head of many executive groups. They are selected by the president.
What are the powers of the president according to the constitution?
Presidents’ originally were decided to have limited power. They do have the power to handle vetoing bills/laws and nominate judges in supreme courts. They are also allowed to nominate for vacant positions in government.
What is the structure of the Federal court system?
The Federal court system is made of three branches: trial courts, intermediate appeal courts, and final appeal courts (Supreme court).
How does the Supreme court come to a decision?
Supreme courts make decisions based on litigants’ oral discussions. The Supreme court is then left to decide upon themselves. They come up with potential opinions and announce the final decision.
How many justices are in the supreme court?
It was never written in the constitution, but the number of justices has always remained as 9 since 1869.
What is the overall concept of Judicial review? How does this relate to checks and balances?
Supreme Courts are able to determine the justifiability of actions made by both the executive and legislative branches of government.
What is the main function of a Bureaucracy?
To implement and enforce laws made by government officials.
What are the four parts/ categories of a Bureaucracy?
Cabinet departments, independent executive agencies, regulatory agencies, and government corporations.
