UNIT 2– Respiratory System Flashcards
breathing in name
inhaling
breathing out name
exhaling
what happens when u inhale (oxygen wise)
- oxygen comes in
- oxygen transported to working muscles
what happens when you exhale (waste product wise)
CO2 removed from bloodstream
what is gaseous exchange
the oxygen from lungs going in and CO2 being removed from bloodstream
how do CO2 and O2 get in/out of bloodstream?
Diffusion
Alveoli adaptations
- thin walls (1 cell thick)
- moist surface
- large surface area
- surrounded by capillaries
where does blood come in from and go to near alveoli
pulmonary artery-> pulmonary vein
oxygen->CO2 route
O2 travels to working muscles-> oxygen used to create energy and CO2 created-> CO2 travels back through bloodstream, to alveoli
what happens when u inhale
- ribs= up and outwards
- diaphragm= flattens
- intercostal muscles= contract
- volume in lungs= increases
- pressure decreases
what happens when you exhale?
- ribs= down and inwards
- diaphragm= relaxes and goes up
- intercostal muscles= relax
- volume in lungs= decreases
- pressure increases
tidal volume definition
volume of air inhaled per breath (during normal breathing)
minute ventilation definiition
volume of air breathed per minute
vital capacity definition
max. amount of air you can breathe out
residual volume
air left in lungs after breathing
