GENRE

EXPOSITORY TEXT
gives facts, examples, and explanations about a topic. It may include, charts, graphs, diagrams or timelines
FOLKTALE
describes a task that a hero or heroine must accomplish. Often includes magical characters and settings. Frequently includes foreshadowing of the future and a lesson.
FREE VERSE POETRY
has no set rhyme or rhythm, can be a mix of short and long lines
RHYME
a poem that the lines end with the same sound
NARRATIVE
a poem that tells a story. Has characters and dialogue
REPETITION
the repeating of words, phrases or lines in a poem
SETTING

CONTRACTION
a way to shorten words by combining two or more words and removing letters, usually with an apostrophe, squish together, friends forever

helps to determine the meaning and pronunciation of a word or phrase

the “life lesson” or main idea that the author wants the reader to learn. The theme is rarely clearly stated in the story

the order in which events happen in a text

using emotion to read and add interest
MAIN IDEA
summarizes the key points that are important in the writing
