UNIT 2 - Producing New Cells Flashcards
why do cells divide?
to allow organisms to
• grow
• repair
• reproduce
where is the genetic information stored?
the nucleus
what is the process of cells dividing called?
mitosis
what is a cell which has two sets of chromosomes called?
diploid
what is a cell with one set of chromosomes called?
haploid
why is mitosis important?
mitosis is important because it ensures that each daughter cell contains a copy of each of the parent cell chromosomes
this means each daughter cell will be genetically identical to the parent cell and contain all the genetic information needed to carry out all of its activities and functions
what is the number of chromosomes in an organism called?
the chromosomes complement
what is the chromosome complement different in?
different species
what is a fertilised egg called?
a zygote
what is the zygote called after about one week?
an embryo
what are the different types of stem cells called?
embryonic and tissue
what can stem cells do?
stem cells can self renew and have the ability to become any type of cell although only one type of stem cell can become one type of other cell
where in embryonic stem cells found?
in an embryo
where are tissue stem cells found?
all throughout the body, all throughout life
what is the medical use of stem cells found in bone marrow?
treating leukaemia - a type of cancer caused by abnormal blood cells
