Unit 2: Nomenclature Flashcards
molecular compounds
composed of atoms held together in molecules by covalent bonds and nonmetals.
covalent bonds
bonds between two atoms created by physically sharing one or more pair of electrons.
binary molecular compounds
compounds consisting of two metals (ex: S02)
binary ionic compounds
compounds consisting of cations (usually metal) and anions (usually nonmetal).
polyatomic ions
charged groups of two or more atoms joined together by covalent bonds (ex: SO4^2–, OH^–).
oxyanions
polyatomic anions containing oxygen in combination with one or more other element (ex: acetate (C3H3O2^-), nitrate (NO3^-).
binary acids
contain hydrogen and a monoatomic anion (ex: Cl^-, S^2-); most commonly contain halogens (ex: HCl, HBr). Named by using “hydro-“ + halogen base name + “-ic” + “acid” (ex: HBr = hydrobromic acid).
