Unit 2 - Nature's Chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
What determines the melting and boiling points in alcohols?
A
The more hydroxyl groups the greater the force of attraction between the molecules and hence increasing the melting and boiling points.
2
Q
When a primary alcohol is oxidised what does it become?
A
An aldehyde. For example, Ethanol to ethanal, propan-1-ol to propanal.
3
Q
What is the general formula of the aldehydes?
A
CnH2nO
4
Q
When a secondary alcohol is oxidised what does it become?
A
A ketone.
5
Q
When a tertiary alcohol is oxidised what does it become?
A
Nothing. Tertiary alcohols are not readily oxidised and show no reaction when mixed with an oxidising agent.
