Unit 2: Motion and Force Flashcards
How are forces represented?
Free body diagram
Show unbalanced force and balanced force.
Unbalanced Balanced
15->
Draw a force vector for a force of +5N east. Ensure you provide a proper scale.
+5N 1cm = 5N
—->
What is friction?
A force that will cause a moving object to slow down and finally stop.
Give 3 examples of why you would want to increase friction between objects.
driving on ice, warming up your hands, drying your hair
Give 3 examples of when you would want to decrease the amount of friction between objects.
- When swimming, skateboarding, and gymnastics
Newtons 2nd law
Force is proportional to the mass and acceleration of an object
Newtons 1st law
An object at rest will stay at rest and an object at motion will stay in motion at a constant rate until acted upon by an unbalanced force
Law of universal gravitation
Any time objects collide, the total amount of momentum stays the same
Objects falling through air experience a type of fluid friction called
air resistance
The acceleration due to gravity of all objects in free fall is the same. Why, then, do some objects fall through the air at a different rate than others?
Air resistance
Explain the difference between weight and mass
Weight is the force Gravity is pushing on an object and mass is the amount of matter in an object
When is an object said to be in free fall?
When there is no air resistance
What is the formula for Momentum?
P=m*v
What is meant by force?
To push or pull
