Unit 2 Matter Test Review Flashcards
Science
Matter
Anything that takes up space.
Physical Properties
Characteristics of matter that you can observe or measure directly.
Reflectivity
The ability to reflect light (Physical Property)
Hardness
Describe how easily something can be bent or dented (Physical Property)
Flexible
Describes how objects can be bent without breaking (Physical Property)
Magnetic
Describes objects that are attracted to magnets, usually made of metal (Physical Property)
Conductivity
The ability to transfer heat or electricity (Physical Property)
Conductors
Materials that let heat or electricity travel easily through them.
Insulators
Materials that do not easily let the heat or electricity travel through them.
Solubility
The ability of one substance to dissolve into another (Physical Property)
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances in which the substances keep their identities.
Solution
A special kind of mixture that has the same composition throughout because its particles are mixed evenly.
Taco- Solution or Mixture?
Mixture :)
Lemonade- Solution or Mixture?
Solution :)
AIR- Solution or Mixture?
Solution :)
Physical Change
The size, color, shape may change, but the matter itself is the same.
Is changing the state of matter a Physical Change or Chemical Change?
Physical Change :)
What phase change? Solid+Heat=Liquid
Melting :)
What phase change? Liquid+Heat=Gas
Evaporation :)
What phase change? Liquid-Heat=Solid
Freezing :)
What phase change? Gas-Heat=Liquid
Condensation :)
Chemical Change
A change in which new matter is formed.
Burning Wood-Physical Change or Chemical Change?
Chemical Change :)
Cooking eggs-Physical Change or Chemical Change?
Chemical Change :)
The smell produced by rotting trash-Physical Change or Chemical Change?
Chemical Change
crumpling paper- Physical Change or Chemical Change?
Physical Change
Boiling water/evaporating-Physical Change or Chemical Change?
Physical Change
Changing states of Matter Molecules are:
Packed tightly for solid
Slightly separated for liquid
Spread out gas
Three states of Matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Solid
Has a definite shape and volume
Particles are tightly packed
Liquid
Has no definite shape but definite volume
Particles not as tightly packed and can flow past each other
Gas
Has neither definite shape nor volume
Particles have space between them to move freely
Boiling Point
212 degrees Fahrenhiet
Freezing Point
32 degrees Fahrenheit
