Define Values of Care
- Core principles that underpin care work. They aim to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequalities and help to ensure individuals care needs are met
How do values of care improve practice so that staff know how to provide effective care?
- Guide staff about legal requirements
- Applying the values of care helps to maintain or improve quality of life
- For example helping a child to reach their full potential and providing access to those with mobility problems or communication barriers
Define Equality
- Everyone is treated fairly and equally
- Everyone is given the same choice and opportunities
- People must not be discriminated against
Define Rights
- What everyone is legally entitled t0
What are the 6 examples of rights?
- Choice
- Confidentiality
- Protection from abuse and harm
- Equal and fair treatment
- Consultation
- Right to life
Define Choice
- Choice gives individuals control over their lives and increases their self-esteem by promoting independence
E.g We have the right to choose which Gp we go to
Define Confidentiality
Information should only be shared on a needs to know basis. The four exceptions are:
- At risk of harming others
- At risk of harming themselves
- When there is a risk of serious offence being carried out
- At risk of being harmed by others
How can someone keep confidentiality in a health and care setting?
- Safe storage of records both electronically and physically not discussing or sharing information about other individuals
Define Protection from harm and abuse
- This involves ensuring physical and emotional care of everyone in a health, social or childcare setting
- This includes safeguarding procedures, fire and evacuation procedures, risk assessments etc.
Define Equal and fair treatment
- Individuals should be treated in accordance to the law and their needs
Define Consultation
- Everyone should be asked for their opinions and views on the type of care and activities they would like
Define Right to life
- No one is allowed to harm you and you can’t harm anyone else
Define Diversity
- Diversity is recognising and valuing that everyone is unique. This involves respecting and accepting individual differences
