Unit 2: Linear Functions Flashcards
Linear Function
straight, horizontal or diagonal line
Slope
change in y divided by the change in x
Slope Context Clues
(other words for Slope)
unit rate
constant rate of change
per , each, every
monthly, weekly, hourly
Unit/Unit
Y-intercept
the point (0 , Y) where x=0.
where a graph crosses the y-axis
Y-intercept Context Clues
(other words for y-intercept)
Constant Term
initial value, initial fee
base fee, base rate
starting value
Slope-Intercept Form
y = mx + b
Standard Form of a Line
Ax + By = C
Positive Slope
from left to right the graph is increasing
Negative Slope
from left to right the graph is decreasing
Zero Slope
a horizontal line that doesn’t increase or decrease
Undefined Slope
a vertical line that doesn’t increase or decrease
X-intercept
the point (X, 0) where y=0
where a graph crosses the x-axis
How to Identify a Linear Table
a table that changes by repeated addition/subtraction
the first difference between outputs is constant
Combine Like Terms
Adding the coefficients of terms with the same variable and exponent
Simplify
to reduce an expression by combining like terms
to reduce a fraction to its lowest terms
Inverse Operation
the operation that “undoes” the current operation
Example:
multiplication “undoes” division
subtraction “undoes” addition
taking the square root “undoes” squaring
Solve
To use inverse operations to get a variable by itself
What is the Solution to an equation?
the value(s) that makes an equation true on both sides of the equal sign
How do you find a Solution from a table?
If the point is in the table it is a solution to the equation
How do you find a Solution from a graph?
If the point is on the graph of an equation then it is a solution to that equation
