What is the social contract?
An agreement among the people in a place to cooperate for the good of society
What do the poor live in?
Slums
Describe the poor:
One room shacks made of cardboard/other junk No electricity/running water Hold more than 1 job Work as maids, dishwashers, etc. Work long hours with little pay
What do the working poor live in?
Large tenements/run-down apartments
Describe the working poor:
Jobs too low-paying to lift them out of poverty
Live closer to city center
Cinder block homes with metal/tar covered roofs
Have electricity/running water
Usually paved streets
What does the middle class live in?
Houses/apartments near city center or modern suburbs farther away
Describe the middle class:
Work in business, private education, or government
Afford some luxuries like phones/TV
What do the rich live in?
“Estates”
Describe the rich:
Large landowners or leaders in business/government
Live in “estates” with high walls and security systems
The working poor work as their maids, gardeners, etc.
