Unit 2: Human physiology Flashcards
Mouth
Voluntary control of eating and swallowing. Mechanical digestion if food by chewing and mixing w saliva which contains lubricants and enzymes that start starch digestion.
Pharynx
Contracts to force food to esophagus
Epiglotis
Flap of tissue that covers trachea during swallowing
Esophagus
Movement of food by peristalsis from the mouth to the stomach
Fall bladder
Stores and regulates the release of bile
Liver
Secretes surfactants in bile to break up lipid droplets (increase in S.A)
Pancreas
Secretes lipase, amylase and protease
Stomach
Churns and mixes w secretes water and acid which kills foreign bacteria and other phatogens in food. Initial stages of protein digestion. Mechanical digestion.
Small intestine
Final stages of digestion of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids. Neutralizes stomach acid and absorbs nutrients. Chemical digestion.
Large intestine
Re-absorption of water, further digestion especially of carbohydrates by symbiotic bacteria, forms and stores feces.
