Define Motivation
The reason why employees want to work hard and work effectively for the business
Define wage
Payment for work, usually paid weekly
Define a salary
Payment for work usually paid monthly
What is commission?
Payment relating to number of sales made
What is profit sharing?
A system whereby a proportion of the comany’s profits is paid out to employees
What is a bonus?
An additional amount of payment above basic pay as a rewark for good work
What is performance related pay?
Pay what is related to the effectiveness of the employee where their output can easily be measured
What is share owenership?
Where shares in the company are given to employees so that they become part owner in the company
What is an appraisal?
A method of assessing the effectiveness of an employee
What are Fringe benefits?
Non-financial rewards given to employees
What is Job satisfaction
The enjoyment derived from feeling that you have done a good job
What is Job rotation?
Involves workers swapping round and doing each specific task for only a limited time and then changing round again
What is Job enlargement?
Where extra tasks of a similar level of work are added to a worker’s job description
What is Job enrichment?
Involves looking at jobs and adding tasks that require more skill and/or responsibility
What is Organisational structure?
The levels of management and division of responsibilities within an organisation
What is Chain of command?
The structure in an organisation which allows instruction to be passed down from senior management to lower levels of management
What is The span of control?
The number of subordinates working directily under a manager
What are Line managers?
They have direct responsibility over people below them in the hierarchy of an organisation
What are staff managers?
Specialists who provide support, information and assistance to line managers
What is delegation?
Giving a subordinate the authority to perform particular tasks
What are leadership styles?
The different approaches to dealing with people when in a position of authority (autocratic, laissez faire or democratic
What is Autocratic leadership?
Where the manager expects to be in charge of the business and to have their orders followed
What is democratic leadership?
The managers get other employees involved in the decision making process
What is Laissez faire leadership?
Making broad objective of the business known to employees, but then they are left to make their own decisions and organise their own work
What is a trade union?
A group of workers who have joined together to ensure their interest are protected
What is a Closed shop
All employees must be a members of the same trade union
What is Recruitment?
The process from indentifying that the business needs to employ someone up to the point at which applications have arived at the business
What is a Job analysis?
It identifies and records the responisbilities and tasks relating to a job
What is a Job description?
It outlines the responsibilities and duties to be carried out by someone employed to do a specific job
What is a Job specification?
A document which outline the requirements, qualifcations, expertise, physical characteristics, etc for a specified job
What is Internal recuitment?
When a vacancy is filled by someone who is an existing employee of the business
What is External recruitment?
When a vacancy is filled by someone who is not an existing employee and will be new to the business
What is part-time?
Employment which often is considered to be between 1 and 30-35 hours a week
What is Full-time
Employees will usually work 35 hours or more a week
What is induction training?
An introduction given to a new employee explaining, the firm’s activities, customs and procedures and introducing them to their fellow workers
What is On-the-job training?
It occurs by watching more experienced worker doing the job
What is Off-the job training?
Being traind away from the workplace, usually by specialist trainers
What is the Workforce planning?
Establishing the workforce needed by the business for the foreseeable future in terms of the number and skills of employees required
What is Redundancy?
When an employee is no longer needed and so loses their job. It is not due to any aspec of their being usatisfactory
What is Ethical decision?
A decision taken by a manager or a company because of the moral code observed by the firm
What is an industiral tribunal
A legan meeting which consider workers’ compalints of unfair dismissal or discrimination at work
What is a contact of employment?
A legal agreement between employer and employee listing the rights and responsibilities of workers
What is communication?
Is when a message from the sneder to the receiver, undertands the message
What is the message?
The information or instructions being passed by the sneder to the receiver
What is internal communication
It is the communication between members of the same organisation
What is external communication?
The communication between the organisation and other organistations or individuals
What is the medium of communication?
The method used to send a message, for example, a letter is a method of written communication and a meeting is a method of verbal communication
