New Industrial Age
This process began in Britain in the 18th century and from there spread to other parts of the world. Although used earlier by French writers, this term was first popularized by the English economic historian Arnold Toynbee (1852-1883) to describe Britain’s economic development from 1760 to 1840.
John D. Rockefeller/Standard Oil
An American business magnate and Philanthropies. He was considered the wealthiest American of all time and the richest person in modern history. He was born into a large family in upstate New York that moved several times before eventually settling in Clevland, Ohio. His company was an American oil-producing transporting, refining, a marketing company. Established in 1870 by this man and Henry Flager as a corporation in Ohio it was the largest oil refiner in the world of its time.
Andrew Carnegie/ Carnegie Steel
A Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist. He led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century and became one of the richest Americans in history. He became a leading philanthropist in the U.S and in the British empire. His company was a
steel producing company primarily created by this man and several close associates, to manage business st steel mills in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania are in the late 19th century.
Monopoly/Trust
The exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.
Horizontal Integration
When a business grows by acquiring a similar company in their industry at the same point of the supply chain.
Vertical Integration
When a business expands by acquiring another company that operates before or after them in the supply chain.

An American inventor and businessman who has been described as America’s greatest inventor. He developed
many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion picture.

A federally owned island in New York Harbor that was the United States busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892-1924 approximately 12 million immigrants arriving at the port of New York and New Jersey were processed there under federal law.
New Immigrants
Unlike earlier immigrants, who mainly came from northern and western Europe. They came largely from Southern and Eastern Europe. Largely, catholic and Jewish in religion, they came from the Balkins, Italy, Poland, and Russia.

In the politics of representative democracies, this is a small political group in which an authoritative leader or small group command the support of a corps of supporters and businesses who receive patronage as rewards for their effort
Boss Tweed
An American politician most notable for being the “boss” of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in the politics of 19th century, New York City, and state.
Tammany Hall
Also known as the society of St. Tammany, Sons of St. Tammany, or the Columbian Order, was a New York City political organization founded in 1786 and incorporated on May 12, 1789, as the Tammany Society.
