Unit 2- Forces Flashcards
Force Definition
A push or pull on an object; a vector quantity; measured in Newtons.
Equation for Force of Gravity (N)
Fg=mg
Newton’s First Law of Motion
Law of inertia; states that if the net external force on an object is zero, the object will remain at rest or continue to move at a constant velocity.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
If an object experiences an external force (where Fnet doesn’t equal 0) the object will accelerate in the direction of the force.
Equation for Newton’s Second Law
Fnet=ma
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Mass Definition
The quantity of matter in a body; measured in kg; absolute.
Weight Definition and Equation
The force of gravity affecting an object; measured in N.
Weight=mass x gravitational acceleration
Static Friction (Ffs) Definition
Force that prevents an object from starting to move.
Kinetic Friction (Ffk) Definition
Force that opposes an object that is already moving.
Coefficient of Static Friction Equation
Ms=Fsmax/Fn
Coefficient of Kinetic Friction Equation
Mk=Fk/Fn
