Legend
Traditional stories about heroes (typically knights, kings, or other persons of status) and their accomplishments that inspire and teach lessons
Folktale
Traditional stories about common people or animals that teach moral lessons
Epic
A long, narrative poem about a hero, his journey, and his accomplishments.
Myth
Traditional stories that explain creation, nature, customs, beliefs, or that tell stories of heroic legends
Explanatory Myth
Explains occurences in nature, customs, beliefs, traditions, etc.
Creation Myth
Explains how the world and humans came to be; every culture has one
Heroic Myth
Stories about heroes, their journeys, and their accomplishments
Archetype
a model, pattern, or universally recognizable idea
Oral Tradition
Passing down stories and history through generations by word of mouth
Image Archetype
symbols such as water, snakes, garden, colors
Character Archetype
characters such as hero, villain, love interest, prophet
Theme Archetype
main ideas such as love conquers all, good triumphs over evil
Plot Pattern Archetype
plot events such as celebrations, journeys, battles
Allusion
a subtle or direct reference to literature, mythology, and/or history.
Parody
a humorous imitation of something, often exaggerating its style or content to make fun of it.
