Unit 2: Env Research & Data Collection Flashcards
What’s the sampling method
- It’s made of wire or wood with specific dimensions
- It’s a T shaped frame used to carry out samples
Quadrants
What’s the sampling method
- There is a beaker that is at level with the ground so the insect falls in
- Some have a drain for the rain
- Anti-freeze is used for preventing preditory insects from eating the sample, and prevent the sample from escaping
Pitfall Trap
What’s the sampling method
- A net mounted on a pole
Sweep Nets
What’s the sampling method
- A cloth stretched out on a square or rectangular frame
- It’s held underneath tree branches or a shrub
Beating Tray
What’s the sampling method
- A sweep net is placed down stream
- A researcher kicks sediments in the net and dislodged organisms
Kick Sampling
What’s the sampling method
- Lights like fluorescent lamps and UV lights can collect data on nocturnal species
Light Traps
What is primary data?
It’s the information collected by the researcher
What is seconday data?
It’s the data collected by somebody else in a seperate investigation
What is random sampling?
It’s when points are selected using random numbers
random sampling is useful when the size of the sample is small
What’s systematic sampling?
It’s when a regular pattern is use to identify sample points
it can minimize bias
What’s the sampling method
Used to estimate the size of a population
Capture-mark-recapture
What is water turbidity?
A sampling method
What is turbidity?
It’s the cloudiness of water due to sediments
