What does ‘free burghers’ mean?
‘Free burghers’ are VOC employees who were released from their contracts to farm. Free citizens.
Where were the free burghers allocated land?
Along the Liesbeeck River.
What were the free burghers provided with from the VOC?
Seeds, tools and loans to start farming.
What did the VOC forbid from the free burghers?
The free burghers were forbidden by the VOC to not trade with the Khoi.
What happened when the settlement at the Cape began to expand?
There were conflicts with the Khoi who lost their grazing pastures as settlers occupied their land and in some instances seized their cattle.
How many people lived at the Cape in 1679 and how many were free burghers?
In 1679 there were only 289 Dutch people in the Cape, with 142 of them being free burghers.
