Unit 2 Definitions Flashcards
Define density
The mass of an object per unit volume.
Define elastic limit
The point beyond which extension is no longer proportional to force added. or a material is permanently stretched.
Define plastic deformation
Material has been permanently extended/stretched. It will no longer return to its original length when the load is removed.
Define brittle
Material snaps without stretching or bending when subject to stress.
Define stress
Force per unit cross sectional area.
Define amplitude
Maximum displacement of a vibrating particle.
Define coherent sources
Waves with the same frequency and a constant phase difference. (produced by the double slit)
How is a transverse wave formed?
Perpendicular vibrations compared to the direction of flow of energy (propagation of wave)
How is a longitudinal wave formed?
Vibrations parallel to the direction of energy flow (wave propagation)
Define monochromatic
Single wavelength source.
Define strain
The extension per unit length of material.
Define wavelength
Least distance between two adjacent vibrating particles with the same displacement.
Define frequency
The number of cycles/waves per second.
Define polarisation
(Transverse) Waves vibrating in only one plane
Define a node and antinode
A fixed point on a stationary wave with zero displacement/amplitude.
Fixed point of a stationary wave where amplitude/displacement is at a maximum.
