Unit 2 Concept 1 Skeletal Test Flashcards
- Cords of dense connective tissue that connects muscles to bone are called
C, tendons
- Which of the following leg bones doesn’t actually bear any weight but instead aids in stabilizing the ankle joint?
B, fibula
- The _______ girdle provides more flexibility and motility than the ______ girdle. The _________ girdle is the sturdiest of the two.
D; pectoral, pelvic, pelvic
- The shaft of long bones is the ________
D, medullary canal
- The most important minerals stored in bones are:
B, calcium and phosphorus
- The canal that runs through the core of each osteon contains:
D, blood vessels and nerve fibers
- The sternum is the result of fusion of three bones called the:
C, manubrios, body, xiphoid process
- These are four stages in the healing of a bone fracture. Which of the following best illustrates the sequence of these stages:
B; 4,3,1,2
- A bone that has approximately the same width, length, and height
B, short bone
- The bones in your wrist
C, flat bone
- List four of the six overall functions of the skeletal system we discussed in class.
a. Support/ framework for the body
b. Protect/guard organs
c. Aid in movement
d. Storage of minerals and energy, blood cell formation, hormone production
- On the figure on your answer sheet, label the bones indicated by the lines. Picture of an arm top to bottom
Clavicle, scapula, humerus, ulna, radius, carpal, metacarpals, phalanges
- Place the following steps of the bone remodeling process in the correct order.
D - Osteocytes release chemical signals to send osteoclasts to the damage , A - Osteoclasts return calcium and phosphate to the blood through resorption, B - Macrophages promote bone tissue remodeling, C - Osteoblasts come in and build new bone.
- Explain why people who experience paralysis in their lower limbs have thinner, weaker bones in their legs and thighs.
Because bone remodeling is stimulated when the osteocytes recieved signals, such as stress/force being out on the bones, to rebuild the bone. If these stimuli are not sent than bone will not be regenerated and strengthened
- Label the spongy bone and compact bone and compact bone in the picture on your answer sheet. Then describe, in detail, one structure unique to compact bone and one structure unique to spongy bone
Compact bone is compact which are like tiny weight-bearing pillars in the bone that have a central canal running through the middle that contains small blood vessels and nerve fibers. Spongy bone doesn’t have ostens but does have trabeculae which are like tiny bone struts where the bone marrow is that also help the bone resist stress. Also the spongy bone is one the left part of the bone and compact on the right of the picture.
- The maxilla is the lower jawbone (true or false)
