Unit 2: Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What can indicate a chemical reaction?
- Colour
- Energy (heat or light)
- Gas
- Solid
What is the law of conservation of matter?
Atoms are not created or destroyed in a reaction.
What does aqueous mean?
Dissolved in water.
What is synthesis?
Several small reactants produce fewer, larger products.
What is formed when a metal and nonmetal react?
Iconic compound.
What is formed when a nonmetal and nonmetal react
Molecular compound.
What is formed when a metallic and carbon dioxide react?
Metal carbonate.
What is formed when a metal oxide and water react?
Metal hydroxide.
What is formed when a nonmetal oxide and water react?
Oxyacid.
What is decomposition?
A more complex reactant breaking down into simpler products.
What is single displacement?
An element displaces another similar element in a compound.
What displaces what in a single displacement reaction?
An element displaces another similar in a compound.
What does the activity series have to do with single displacement?
It determines if a single displacement reaction will occur. The element with the higher reactivity will end up in the compound.
What is double displacement?
Two ionic compounds switch jobs.
What state must the compounds be in for a double displacement reaction to occur?
Aqueous.
