Unit 2: Chapter 3 Vocab Flashcards
population distribution
The pattern of human settlement; the spread of people across the earth
population density
A measure of the average population per square mile or kilometer of an area
midlatitudes
The regions between 30 degrees N and 60 degrees N, and between 30 degrees S and 60 degrees S
arithmetic population density
calculated by dividing a region’s population by its total area
physiological population density
calculated by dividing population by the amount of arable land
arable land
land suitable for growing crops
carrying capacity
The population it can support without without significant environmental deterioration
agricultural population density
Compares the number of farmers to the area of arable land; gives an indication of the efficiency of the region’s farmers
redistricting
asdf
overpopulation
A region having more people than it can support
population pyramid
A useful tool to study population; although this tool is based only on age and gender data, it can provide information on birth rates, death rates, how long people live on average, and economic development
cohort
The vertical axis shows age groups on a population pyramid
birth deficit
The bars of the pyramid representing children born during the conflict are often significantly shorter that the bars immediately above and below them
baby boom
Once hostilities end and peace continues, the birth rate often spikes
baby bust
After the boom ends, births are lower for a number of years
echo
With a high number of boomers in the population having children it can be a significant increase in births that shows up as a bulge on a pyramid; reflects an earlier baby boom
dependency ratio
A value comparing the working to the nonworking parts of a population
dependent population
People under 15 or over 64 who are considered too young or too old to work full-time
