unit 2 by jade Flashcards
true or false
Human activity can never have a negative affect on an ecosystem
false
Decomposers are important for cycling nutrients back into an ecosystem
true
What humans dump into the sewer system does not impact aquatic ecosystems
false
Frogs are not important, environmental indicators
false
Introduced species greatly impact native ecosystems
true
Multiple choice and interacting system consisting of biotic and abiotic components is called
an ecosystem
A group of ducks, composed of members of one species would be considered
a population
A group of organisms that could be found in and around a pond would be considered
a community
The following statement is not true about producers
Producers, eat other producers
Organisms that break down, waste from other living and dead organisms to get nutrients for their own use are called
Decomposers
Frogs in other amphibians are exposed to different environmental toxins in different ecosystems.
2
Which of the following factors listed is abiotic
air
The way which plants convert in store energy from the sun is called
Photosynthesis
Which statement regarding energy transfer in a food chain is true.
The products (ending materials) in photosynthesis are
Oxygen and sugar
Atmospheric carbon dioxide is used by
Plants during photosynthesis
In a typical food chain plants would be first found at the
first level
Species that cannot be found anywhere on earth is said to be
Extinct
omnivores can be considered both
Producers and secondary consumers
Burning fossil fuels negatively impacts ecosystems by
Contributing to global warming over exploding the resource
matching
Organisms which manufacture their own food from the abiotic environment
producers
The study of the relationship between living and nonliving parts of the ecosystem
Ecology
rain, air and temperature are an example of factors in an environment
abiotic
the role an organism lays in an ecosystem
niche
organisms which feed on dead organisms
Scavengers
Organisms that break down dead organisms to recycle the nutrients back into an ecosystem
Decomposers
Several food chains linked together
food web
The environmental space in which an organism lives
habitat
plants, animals and bacteria would all be factors within an ecosystem
botic
Term used to describe the number of different plant and animal species with in an ecosystem
Biodiversity
List three human activities that have negatively impacted biodiversity in an ecosystems
Three ways human activities of negatively impacted biodiversity in ecosystems are polluting, hunting, and overfishing
Pesticides are used to kill pest species like mosquitoes. What could happen to an ecosystem, if all of the mosquitoes were killed by pesticides
The ecosystem we’re not doing too well in plant growth because that’s what it would affect because mosquitoes are pollinators.
How do you think humans can control mosquitoes without using pesticides?
I think one way humans can control mosquitoes without pesticides, are planting certain flowers that they dislike, like lavender or rosemary. If you do that, they won’t bother you anymore because they don’t like those plants.
List two predator – prey, relationships, that you might find in an arctic ecosystem.
- polar bears-ringede seals
- arctic fox-lemmings
Using the terminologies, you’ve learned in class explain how producers are related to consumers in a food chain. Give an example of a producer and a consumer
Producers are related to consumers in a food chain because producers provide food for the consumers. An example of a producer is grass and an example of a consumer is rabbit.
Create a food chain from the list of animals provided. Label each as either producer, secondary, consumer, primary, consumer, territory, consumer.

Scorpion
Cricket

Calculate the growth of a herd of grade 9 students in the halls of Paul Dwyer for one year if that year 20 young wings were born 15 students immigrated from Maxwell five died from old age and 10 students left a wire to live at the depot.
Population growth:
What is the chemical equation for photo synthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2.
What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration?
C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 –> 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + ATP
What does nitro fixing bacteria convert into?
It converts n2 into ammonia
What does nitrifying bacteria convert into?
It converts ammonia into nitrates
What does denitrifying bacteria convert into?
it coverts nitrates into n2
