What is an alkane?

A

Alkane is a homologous series of hydrocarbons. They have similar chemical properties, and they tend to follow a general formula which is: CnH2n+2.

What are saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons?

A

Saturated hydrocarbons: are carbon atoms joined together by a single bond. (Alkane)

Unsaturated hydrocarbons: Contain a C = C double bond. (Alkene)

Both: Are compounds containing hydrogen and carbon atoms only.

Describe the results of using bromine water to test for unsaturations in a hydrocarbon?

A

If hydrocarbon has unsaturations, bromine water goes from brown to colorless, if hydrocarbon is fully saturated, bromine water remains brown.
