Unit 2: Burning questions Flashcards
1
Q
What is an alkane?
A
Alkane is a homologous series of hydrocarbons. They have similar chemical properties, and they tend to follow a general formula which is: CnH2n+2.
C - C
2
Q
What are saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons?
A
Saturated hydrocarbons: are carbon atoms joined together by a single bond. (Alkane)
Unsaturated hydrocarbons: Contain a C = C double bond. (Alkene)
Both: Are compounds containing hydrogen and carbon atoms only.
3
Q
What is Ethane’s formula?
A
C2H6
4
Q
Describe the results of using bromine water to test for unsaturations in a hydrocarbon?
A
If hydrocarbon has unsaturations, bromine water goes from brown to colorless, if hydrocarbon is fully saturated, bromine water remains brown.
