Unit 2: Biomes Flashcards
What is the tundra biome
Treeless regions with extreme cold and low rainfall
2 types
Alpine ( mountains prevent trees from growing but small plants can grow)
Arctic (permafrost prevents trees from growing but shrugs and vegetation grow during short summers)
How is global warming affecting the tundra biome
Melting ice caps and permafrost
Permafrost carries 14% of the worlds carbon, that is released contributing to more global warming.
How is the tundra biome of Greenland being affected by climate change
Glacier points melting and permafrost thawing leads to the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and increase in sea level.
Due to the late onset of ice forming, new vegetation starts to grow which changes the entire food chain.
How is human activity impacting the Tundra Biome of Greenland
Resource extraction: Mining and oil exploration activities in the region causes habitat loss and pollution
Tourism: Can lead to trampling of vegetation, disturbance of wildlife, and introduction of invasive species.
How can humans sustain the tundra biome of Greenland?
Education and Awareness: Raising awareness about the importance of the tundra and the threats it faces can encourage responsible behavior and support conservation efforts.
Indigenous Knowledge: Incorporating the knowledge and practices of Indigenous communities, who have lived in the region for generations.
Normal climate change stuff
What is the desert biome
Areas of land the receive less than 10 inches of rainfall a year.
Makes 1/3 of world land
4 types
1. Subtropical
2. Semiarid
3. Coastal
4. Polar
Since organisms have adapted to the harsh environment of the desert. The wildlife is particularly vulnerable to ecological changes
How is global warming affecting deserts
Reducing the little water the biome receives, making it harder for organisms to survive.
Drying up oasis
Increases desertification
