Unit 2 Biodiversity Flashcards
What is ecosystem diversity?
the number of different habitats in an available given area.
What is species diversity?
the number of different species in an ecosystem and the balance of evenness of the population sizes of all species in the ecosystem
what is richness?
the total number of different species found in an ecosystem.
what is evenness?
the measure of how all individual organisms in an ecosystem are balanced between different species.
Is there genetic diversity in all populations?
yes
What is a Bottleneck event?
It’s an environmental disaster either created by naturally or by humans that severely reduces population sizes and kills organisms regardless of their genomes.
What do bottleneck events do?
they reduce genetic diversity
What is Inbreeding depression?
Where species reproduce with that same species, often causing harmful mutations.
Who is more at risk for Inbreeding depression?
Smaller populations
What is ecosystem resilience?
It is the ability of an ecosystem to return to its original conditions after a major disturbance.
Higher species diversity =
higher ecosystem resilience
provisioning =
taken directly from the ecosystem
regulating =
regulate climate, air quality, storm damage
supporting =
processes we do ourselves
cultural =
money generated by recreation
