define attitude
a positive or negative evaluation of an attitude object (e.g. person, object, event, idea)
what is the tricomponent model of attitudes?
affective, behavioural, cognitive (ABC)
describe and give an example of the affective component
FEELINGS of hostility towards the group of people (e.g. someone dislikes bikers)
describe and give an example of the behavioural component
the ACTION in discriminating against a group of people (e.g. someone avoids bikers)
describe and give an example of the cognitive component
the reasoning or BELIEF that the group of people belong in the same category (e.g. someone believes that bikers are dangerous)
define and give an example of prejudice
a negative attitude about a group of people based on insufficient or incorrect information (e.g. disliking someone of a different religion because they are not the same as you)
define and give an example of discrimination
the behaviour or action that reflects the
negative attitude or prejudice (e.g. sharing a belonging with another person, but not someone of another race)
define and give an example of stereotypes
a generalised belief about a group of people (e.g. all blondes are dumb)
what are the 5 different types of prejudice?
sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia and disability
what are the 5 ways that prejudice is prevented and reduced?
- education
- intergroup contact
- cognitive interventions
- superordinate goals
- direct experience
what is education?
students being taught through a school how to identify prejudice and discrimination as well as acceptance and tolerance
(e.g. coach boone teaching the football players by talking to them)
what is cognitive intervention?
giving people information about the group they hold a prejudice against and giving time for them to understand information
(e.g. coach boone making the football players learn more about eachother)
what are superordinate goals?
getting 2 conflicting groups to work together on a common goal they both want to solve
(e.g. winning the football season)
what is direct experience?
experience of another culture or lifestyle, this can lead to deeper appreciation or understanding
(e.g. coach yoast’s daughter staying at coach boone’s house)
what is intergroup contact?
direct contact between the two groups who hold a prejudice against each other
must include sustained contact, cooperating together, sharing equal status, and reduction of prejudice be considered a social norm
(e.g. the camp that the football players went on)
