Socialization
o A society’s beliefs, ideals, artistic expression, and patterns of behavior.
Culture
o A complex behavior that is innate.
Instinct
o Biologically inherited actions that reduce discomfort, such as sleeping or eating.
Drive
o An involuntary, preprogrammed behavioral response to a stimulus.
Reflex
o Learning cultural patters of a new culture; generally, we use this concept to describe children learning their own culture.
Enculturation
o Perceptions and practices, largely shaped by the subjective meaning we give to our experiences, used to define what is real.
Social Constructions of Reality
o The assumption that any aspect of a culture is integrated with other aspects, so that no dimension of culture can be understood in isolation. A shift in culture based on changes.
Holism
o Perceptions and practices that come out of interactions of a group.
Constructions
o A group within a larger culture that has distinctive attitudes and behaviors, which sets them apart from the dominant culture.
Subcultures
o Refers to a person’s cultural identity, derived from a shared sense of culture, ancestral, and/or national identity.
Ethnic Groups
o A culturally mandated set of values, beliefs, and behaviors.
Social Norms
o The attitude or opinion that the norms, values, and customs of one’s own culture are superior to those other peoples.
Ethnocentric
o A language used by a subculture to distinguish themselves from the dominant culture.
Argot
o A culture or subculture with values and customs that are vastly different from and usually opposed to those accepted by most of the society.
Counterculture
o The transfer of cultural ideas from one group to another. Usually the cultural idea is transformed somehow.
Diffusion
the belief that no culture is better than others, can be a powerful teaching tool.
Cultural Relativism
the exchange of ideas across the globe, which slowly changes cultures
Globalization
the shift to a modern society, is cultural change driven by technology bringing people together.
