Unit 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Why do designers need to consider the size of the resolution for the images they are using?

A

Quality of Images (pixels or megapixels) – Quality will be needed to be high in a photography. The cost of producting images (usally) increases as the quality of the picture (the megapixel). The brightness and sharpness increases as there is more mexapixels. The storage is another issue with the pictures. A cookery magazine/website wouldn’t need a high quality image. This means that the lower quality camera would the better suited as less storage is needed.

Q

What are the types of compressed image files? Explain them.

A

PNG is a lossless compression type. It is often used where the graphic might be changed by another person,
JPEG is often used for digital camera images because it has a fairly small file size for the quality that it displays. JPEG is a lossy format,
GIF compresses images to a maximum 8-bit colour depth, making it unsuitable for high-quality photographs. GIF is often used where transparency is needed on the graphic. GIF can also be used to store simple animated images.

Q

What is lossiness?

A

Lossless compression means that as the file size is compressed, the picture quality remains the same - it does not get worse and can be returned to origional quality.

Q

What is software?

A

Software is the set of instructions and associated data that direct the computer to do a task. Without it, computers can’t function (work).

17
Q

What are System software?

A

This helps the computer to carry out its basic operating tasks.

18
Q

What is Application software?

A

This helps the user carry out a variety of tasks.

19
Q

What is an operating system?

A

Operating System: This is collection of computer programs that control the interaction of the user and the computer hardware.
It Controls basic input and output, allocates system resources, manages storage space, maintains security, and detects equipment failure.

20
Q

What is Real- Time Operating Systems?

A

The are used in every interactive computer system. They have the ability to process data in(current) real time.

21
Q

What are Single- user Operating Systems?

A

They are design for computers used by a single person at a time. These are usually multi-tasking so that the user can run several software applications at the same time. However, some are single task systems which can run only one application at a time.

22
Q

What are Multi-user Operating Systems?

A

Designed for large computers used by many people at the same time for jobs requiring a lot of processing power, such as weather forecasting. It enables several
