Unit 2 Flashcards
H-bond
Long & weak bonds that result in unique properties
Formed between H and electronegative atoms that have unshared electrons
Hydrophilic
Accepts water
Charged or polar (like water) and dissolves in water
Ex: salt
Hydrophobic
Repels water
Will not mix in water - forms layers
Ex: oil
Amphipathic
Molecules that contain a hydrophobic and hydrophilic region
Ex. Phosphatidylcholine
Micelle
Oriented in a way to where the hydrophobic regions are together and away from water.
The hydrophilic heads are oriented toward the water.
Hydrophobic interactions
Play an important role in folding of proteins and hormone receptor
Very important in ligand binding
Van der Waals interactions
Weak individually
Easily broken & reversible
Universal (occur between any 2 atoms that are near each other)
