Unit 2 Flashcards
What does burning fossil fuel do to the earth
Burning fossil fuels produce carbon dioxide which is released into the atmosphere and which is said to contribute to the greenhouse effect
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance that releases energy when it burns
What are the three main fossil fuels called
Coal, oil, natural gas
What are fossils fuels and how are they formed
Fossil fuels are finite resources which means they will eventually run out. Fossil fuels are formed from dead plants and animals from millions of years ago. Compression, pressure and high temperature decomposes them forming fossil fuels
4 common types of fuels
Gasoline, parrain, diesel fuel, petrol
What gas is needed for burning to take place
Oxygen
What’s the scientific name for burning reaction
Combustion
Describe how and where one of the fossil fuels where formed
Coal- coal was made from millions of years ago and was formed from dead plants which covered in layers of mud and earth
Why do we have a fuel crisis
Because fossil fuels are limited resources which means they will eventually run out
Examples of renewable resources
Solar power: the sun rays create energy when the sunlight hits the cells the electrons flow through the cell which generates energy
Wind turbine: the nervy in the wind turns the blades around the roger which is connected to the main shaft that spins a generator to create energy
The three things that make up a fire triangle
Heat, fuel and oxygen
Fire extinguishers
Water- forest fighters are fought with water, sometimes dropped from aircrafts. Water takes heat away from the fire.
CO2- carbon dioxide is a denses gas that stops oxygen from getting into the fire
What’s a carbohydrate
Carbohydrates are substances ,ade up of carbon hydrogen and oxygen. Carbohydrates can be split down into sugars and starch. Sugars are formed in plants during photosynthesis but the energy is often stored in the form of starch. Starch and sugar and the ,Ain sources of energy in our diet
Positive results in starch sugar and protein
Starch- flour, potato powder, crisps… etc
Sugar- raisins
Protein- milk powder, potato powder, bread
Photosynthesis what is it
Photosynthesis is when a plant makes their own food from absorbing nutrients from the environment. Light is also required for the process.
