Unit 2 Flashcards
Computer
Data processing device that performs 4 major functions:
- Input
- Processing
- Output
- Storage
What are the 3 types of computers and what are they designed for?
- Mainframe Computer: supports multiple users simultaneously.
- Supercomputer: performs calculations extremely fast.
- Embedded Computer: these touch our everyday lives ranging from digital cameras to the electronic thermostat at home.
RAM
Where programs and data that the computer is currently using is stored.
ROM
Holds all the startup instructions of your computer.
CPU
Piece of hardware that carries out the instructions of a computer program. Its speed is measured in Hertz (Hz).
Flash Memory Cards
Allows digital data to be transferred between the computer and digital cameras, smartphones, etc.
Difference between HDD and SSD
HDD has moving parts, can lead to disk failure if dropped or bumped. SSD runs with no noise, emit little heat, require little power and more durable.
NIC (Network Interface Card)
Allows you to connect to the internet.
Port
A place where peripheral devices can be connected to a computer for exchange of data.
USB (Universal Bus Port)
Most commonly used to connect input and output devices to the computer. It’s common as it allows fast transfer of data.
Video Port
Used for connecting monitors to the computer.
DVI (Digital Video Interface)
Used for connecting DVD players, projectors, etc. to the computer.
PS/2 Port
For mouses and keyboards.
Parallel Port
For printers and data.
Power Supply
Transforms wall voltage into voltage the computer can use.
Cold Boot
Starting your computer when it’s completely off.
Warm Boot
Restarting your computer while it’s on.
Sleep Mode
All data you were using remains in the RAM (memory) where they’re quickly accessible when the computer is restarted again.
Hibernate Mode
Similar to sleep mode except all data is stored on the hard drive. This uses lesser battery power.
Ergonomics
Refers to how to set up your computer in order to minimize risk of injury. You can:
1) Position your monitor correctly
2) Purchase an adjustable chair
3) Ensure proper lighting
4) Take breaks
