France and Britain at war; US stays neutral, but trades mostly with French, British retaliate
Jay’s Treaty
Negotiate removal of British forts, payment of seized American ships; neutrality; Britain removes forts
Farewell Address
Don’t get involved in European affairs, no alliances, no political parties
Election of 1796
First contested election; only election to have Pres and VP from different parties - John Adams (Fed Pres) & Thomas Jefferson (DR VP)
XYZ Affair
French offended by Jay’s Treaty; French seize American ships; Adams left army commissions unsigned
Alien and Sedition Acts (1798)
Pres could detain/deport citizens (from country at war); extended time immigrants could apply for citizenship
Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (1798-9)
After A&S acts by T. Jefferson and J. Madison; protested violation of 1 amendment; defended rights of states to nullify act of Congress
