What is the main aim in scientific medicine?
The main aim is to heal the body of illness or disease
Who started scientific medicine and who did they learn it from?
The Greeks started scientific medicine but they learned it from the Egyptians
In the 1700s there was a disease what was it called?
It was called smallpox
How could you get smallpox?
You could get it by touching someone who had the disease
People with smallpox developed what symptoms
They developed terrible blisters and sores
If they did not die from smallpox what did they end up with from the sores?
They were left with bad scars from the sores
Who didn’t get smallpox?
Milking ladies did not get smallpox
But what illness did the milking ladies receive?
They received an illness called cowpox
When did Edward Jenner carry out an experiment?
He carried out an experiment in 1796
What was this experiment?
It was to take some pus from someone who had cowpox and put it into a cut on a little boys arm
What did this young boy feel?
He felt a bit ill but then but soon recovered
Then what was the dangerous part?
It was to make a different cut in the boys arm and put some pus from som one who had smallpox onto the boys arm
What happened to the boy?
The boy remained well and did not receive smallpox
What does vacca mean?
It means cow in Latin
What do we know today about vaccinations and why they work?
Today we know that when very small amounts of germs of a certain disease is put into the body, the body will make antibodies to fight against the germs of the disease
