Unit 2: Flashcards
What is the Internet?
A network of devices communicating and sharing information; design philosophy expressed in a set of protocols.
What is Bandwidth?
Measurement of how many bits per second in or out.
What is a Computing Device?
A machine that can run a program including computers, tablets, etc.
What is a Computing Network?
A group of interconnected computing devices capable of sending or receiving data.
What is a Computing System?
A group of computing devices and programs working together for a common purpose.
What is a Path in networking?
Stream of all of the computers is had to go to get connected.
What is an IP Address?
Unique location of the device when one connects to the internet.
What is Internet Protocol (IP)?
Who are you sending it to and who is it coming from (a unique number from that device).
What is a Protocol?
A well-known set of rules and standards used to communicate between machines.
What is Fault Tolerance?
It can continue to function even during individual component failures. This is important because elements of complex systems like a computer network fail at unexpected times often in groups.
What is Redundancy?
Including extra components so that a system can continue to work even if individual components fail.
What is a Router?
A type of computer that forwards data across a network.
What is a Packet?
A chunk of data sent over a network. Larger messages are divided into packets that may arrive at the destination in order, out of order, or not at all.
What is Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)?
A protocol for sending packets that does error checking to ensure all packets are received and properly ordered.
What is User Datagram Protocol (UDP)?
A protocol for sending packets quickly with minimal error checking and nonresponding to dropped packets.
What is Domain Name System (DNS)?
The system responsible for translating domain names into IP addresses.
What is HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)?
A protocol for computers to request and share the pages that make up the World Wide Web on the internet.
What is the World Wide Web (www)?
A system of linked pages, programs, and files.
What is the Digital Divide?
Differing access to computing devices and the internet, based on socioeconomic or geographic characteristics.
