Why use scientific names and not common names?
Common names aren’t specific enough and can be misleading, sometimes the scientific name is the common name, and sometimes species have multiple common names
What is a cultivar?
“Cultivated varieties”, means a variation of a species created by humans
What are the rules for writing scientific names?
Use italics or underline, capitalize the Genus name, use lowercase for the species name
How do you write a cultivar in a scientific name?
Always last, written after c.v. or in apostrophes
Malus pumila c.v. Honey crisp, Malus pumila ‘Honeycrisp’
What are the levels of Scientific Taxonomy?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, Cultivar
What do taxonomists do?
Identify and classify species
What are the female parts of a plant?
Pistil, ovary and ovule
